Friday Food Photo

This is some food from my early summer trip to Greece, where, of course, the board of fare was incredible. I wish I'd been able to eat more, but there are only so many meals you can eat in a day, especially when the weather is hot and you're on the go all day long.

Happy Friday, everyone! Here in our little corner of Southeast Tennessee, the school buses started to roll just yesterday. If the kids are back to the grind, the weather is supposed to be turning cooler, right?

Bah. No such luck. It still feels like summer here.  :-)

I was about to say that the school year should run just from Labor Day to Memorial Day and the schools should keep their grubby little hands off June, July and August. But then it occurred to me that summer vacations aren't the same now as they were I was a kid, back in the days when we'd run around the neighborhood, ride bikes, go to the library, travel, and have a whole lot of family time. I realized that three months is a long time for our kids to be doing nothing but sitting in a dark room playing video games or watching TV -- and a long time for some of them to go hungry.

Sigh. The more I think about it, the more I feel like I'm in favor of year-round school, with shorter breaks sprinkled throughout the year. After all, when's the last time you saw a kid working on their family's farm during the summer?

Oh, summer's over. The geese flew south last week where I live. Very early, yes. Europe's been cooler than usual and the US hotter than usual this summer.

So, have you tried to recreate any Greek dishes?

Not anything new. The Greek salad was already in regular rotation, and I mostly ate a lot of seafood while I was there -- unfortunately, fresh seafood is hard to come by in Eastern Tennessee. :(

Hrmm... if I ever decide to start a business, that's one to consider... Chattanooga could use a good seafood market... hrmm...
