Oh, what lovely colors! I love how the deep pink peeks through the green! Nice depth of field, too. (What plant is this?)

The plant is one of two blueberry bushes (I also have a blackberry bush) I put in the back yard a year or so ago. I think I'm supposed to pinch off the flowers in an effort to get the plant to be more productive sooner, but I didn't have the heart to pluck away at such pretty little blossoms! So, we'll just have to wait for lots and lots of berries, I suppose...

What does "more productive sooner" mean in this case? After all, if you want blueberries to eat, you have to leave the flowers.

Well, supposedly if you pinch off the flowers, you won't get as many berries in the current year, but you'll also force the bush to focus on filling out -- apparently producing berries distracts from general growth. Discourage the berries now and in subsequent years, the bush will be more bushy -- and will produce more berries.

See, the only blueberry bushes I've ever seen were tiny and wild - and here in Norway. :-) But it makes sense to tolerate a lower yield for a while in order to get a bigger yield later.

I first heard of the strategy in terms of strawberries, and it came up again when I got the blackberry and blueberry bushes. But I'm not a fan of manipulation, so I just let the berries have at it in whatever form they see fit. If I have to wait a little longer for lots of berries, that's ok...
