Arthur Schlesinger dies at 89

Arthur Schlesinger had a heart attack while having dinner with his family last night, and died at the hospital a little later. Historian, speech writer, author, and a proud liberal, even while the media has tried to turn "liberal" into a dirty word -- this is quite a loss.
If we are to survive, we must have ideas, vision, and courage. These things are rarely produced by committees. Everything that matters in our intellectual and moral life begins with an individual confronting his own mind and conscience in a room by himself.
